Suoxu LED Pointer Cat Toy 

There are no naughty cats, only bored ones. Of course, feline nature does include a healthy dose of what we humans would consider contrariness: this is simply due to them having evolved as hunters. However much we encourage them to develop the loving side of their character, the old instincts remain. Not allowing these to express themselves can only result in behavioral problems. 

Every cat wants to chase something. Preferably, this will be something fast but harmless, though a toddler or another cat will do fine in a pinch. The absolute pinnacle of fun, though, is the magical red dot: for cats, this is the equivalent of a twenty-pound note blowing in the wind. Somehow, the fact that they never actually seem to catch this elusive prey only adds to its appeal as a cat toy. 

What Makes This Cat Laser Pointer Special? 

Considering the well-known affinity between cats and red lasers, it’s no surprise that Suoxu has designed this LED pointer specifically as a cat toy. In the first place, instead of having to hold down a button, you toggle the beam on and off using your thumb. I suppose this makes playing with it slightly easier to manage if your finger joints are on the stiff side. After all, the fact that you can drive your cat crazy without having to get out of breath yourself is one of the major advantages of getting a red dot for cats. This applies especially if you’re an older person no longer capable of chasing after a nimble feline. 

As another sign that this laser pointer was designed specifically for playing with cats, the light beam is not so intense as to potentially harm your or your cats’ eyes. That’s what the manufacturer claims, anyway; as far as I’m concerned, it’s best to be on the careful side anyway. The light is certainly bright enough to see in anything but direct sunlight, but you’ll get the best results indoors after drawing the curtains or dimming the lights

You can choose between projecting the traditional and much-loved red dot or line drawings such as a butterfly or mouse. Though your cat probably won’t be able to tell what these pictures represent, it does seem like some are more attracted to an image that seems more substantial than a point. 

Is it Better Than a Normal Laser Pointer? 

Literally, any laser pointer has the ability to send your cats skidding into the walls if you have tile floors or make them shred all of your upholstery if you let the red dot skim over your living room set. So, assuming you already own something like this, why would you get another purely as a cat toy? 

Aside from the points mentioned above, this Suoxu LED pointer has one major thing going for it: USB charging. This makes using it more convenient and less harmful to the environment. You won’t need to go hunting for those special batteries most laser pointers use or stock up on AAAs. 

This, by itself, is a good reason to buy this cat laser pointer. It’s hard to say whether felines or humans love these kinds of games more, so there’s every chance you’re going to be using it for several hours per week, every week. Non-rechargeable batteries typically give up the ghost after only a couple of hours, at least in my old presentation pointer.

What else can you use it for?

Though its main intended purpose is to produce a red dot for cats’ entertainment, the Suoxu LED pointer can also be used during a PowerPoint demonstration, which I suppose makes buying one a tax-deductible business expense. For reasons that probably amount to nothing more than “Because I can,” though, the designer added a couple of secondary functions you may or may not have any use for. 

The same gadget can also double as a UV banknote checker (dollars, euros, and pounds all glow under a blacklight), though it’s not clear why this afterthought was thrown in. If you need a portable anti-forgery device, you probably already have one. 

On the other hand, allowing this cat laser pointer to also serve as a penlight makes more sense. It’s not powerful enough to go hiking with but is good enough for looking into dark niches. A light source is always convenient to have close to hand, for instance when you’re trying to retrieve some other cat toy that’s been batted under the fridge or perhaps into a small corner of another dimension. 

What Is It Like to Own a Suoxu Laser Pointer? 

At first glance, this cat toy’s stainless-steel construction seems pretty durable. When you take it apart, though (as you might do when reviewing a laser pointer but not something the average user needs to bother with), you’ll discover that it isn’t all that sturdy. Still, these go for pretty cheap; you may as well order two or three, as they’re not going to survive too many bumps and falls. 

It is also supposedly capable of shrugging off light rain and sweat in case you want to take it outdoors. However, despite the pen-like clip on one end, it’s a little too bulky and heavy to carry around in your pocket all the time. 

I suppose you’ll be glad to have it in case you meet an insistently playful feline or a suspected currency counterfeiter, but neither of these is really a daily event for most of us. It weighs roughly the same as a deck of cards, is as long as a typical whiteboard marker, and measures about 1½ centimeters (0.6”) across. 

Final Thoughts On The Suoxu LED Pointer Cat Toy

If your little cuddle bandits are anything like mine, you probably have a whole box full of cat toys that were each the most fascinating thing in the world for about five minutes…and haven’t been touched by any paw since, no matter how they’re thrown, dangled, spun, or swished. Each cost only a few bucks, but I must have spent hundreds on fleeting feline amusements over the years.

A laser pointer, however, is evergreen. No matter how many times they’ve seen one, it’s always guaranteed to keep both kids and cats entertained for a few hours. This Suoxu gadget is maybe not all that spectacular in the grand scheme of things, and it’s likely to break sooner rather than later. Still, who cares? It’s very good value at the price and doesn’t use up batteries, so there’s nothing stopping you from buying a spare or two to keep the fun going.
