Who I Am

Practical cat advice for new owners, old hands, and anyone still working their cat out.

I’m Dave King. I live in Brighton with my cats, and I write about cat care because I know exactly what it’s like to want a straight answer and not be able to find one.

Why Cats, Why This Blog

Cats get plenty of coverage online, usually in the form of a listicle written by someone who has never owned one, or a manufacturer’s press release with a paw print stuck on the front. What they get less of is a plain account of what actually works, written by someone who has stood in the pet shop aisle staring at forty scratching posts wondering which one is worth the money.

I started this blog because I kept having the same conversations. Friends getting their first kitten and asking what they genuinely need to buy. People wondering why their cat has started scratching the sofa, or yowling at three in the morning, or refusing the litter tray. I was giving the same answers over and over, so eventually I wrote them down properly.

The site is called Mad Cat Man, and the name is only half a joke. This is not a place for panic or drama. Cats are not complicated once you understand what they are asking for. This is a resource for people who want to get it right, not a running commentary on everything that can go wrong.

What You’ll Find Here

The site covers the parts of cat ownership worth knowing about:

Behaviour and training, why they do the thing and what actually stops it
Health and preventive care, claws, teeth, fleas, worming, and knowing when to ring the vet
Feeding and nutrition, portions, wet versus dry, and what to do about the fussy ones
Product reviews, toys, trees, fountains, flaps and trackers, what’s worth buying in the UK
Breed guides, temperament, grooming needs and what you’re actually signing up for
New kittens and rescue cats, the first weeks, the shopping list, the settling in
Home safety, houseplants, foods and everyday hazards worth knowing about
Step by step how-tos for the jobs nobody enjoys, trimming claws included

What you won’t find is scare content, clickbait, or a hundred products bolted onto a page for the sake of it.

How I Write

I buy the products I write about. No brand pays for a place in a list here, and none ever will. Where I recommend something I haven’t used myself, the article says so. Sources are linked so you can read them rather than taking my word for it, and if I’m not sure about something, I say so instead of guessing. When guidance changes or a product is discontinued, I update the page rather than leaving people with bad information.

I’m not a vet and I don’t pretend to be one. Everything here about illness, medication, dosage or toxicity is background reading for a conversation with your vet, not a replacement for one. If your cat is unwell, ring your practice.

Some pages on this site contain affiliate links. These help keep the site running at no additional cost to you. I only link to things I’d recommend anyway.
